Traditionally well educated and upstanding individuals, both men and women were chosen as town criers to read out official proclamations and announcements. Today town criers are officially appointed by the town mayor and dressed in traditional seventeenth century uniform similar to the mayor and sometimes incorporating the colours of the town criers own town.
